Evaluation & Treatment

How We Diagnose Overuse & Chronic Elbow Injuries

Initial evaluation includes a medical history, physical examination, x-rays and specialized testing. Testing should include evaluation of pulse, nerve function, swelling and skin integrity. Care should be taken to ensure that there are no fragments that puncture the skin as this can lead to increased risk of infection. In case of complex fractures a CT scan is needed.

Nonsurgical

Initial treatment after evaluation includes the placement of a splint to the elbow, a sling to keep the elbow in position, ice and pain medication. Often distal humerus fractures require surgical fixation if there is displacement of the fragments.

Surgical

Surgical fixation is done with realignment of the bones and a placement of plates and screws to hold the alignment. This may be done either as an outpatient or as an overnight stay surgery. Typically physical therapy is started a few days to weeks after the injury depending on the extent of injury. Restrictions from lifting objects typically last 6 to 12 weeks.

Dr. Argintar is quick and efficient and attentive at the same time. I was brought in before my insurance paperwork was even done! He had clearly read (or had been briefed on) my file and I think I was in and out of there in less than 20 mins from the time I walked in the door. Highly recommend.

Dr Argintar was very knowledgeable and helped me understand a bit more of what was causing pain. He was open to listening to me and gave great suggestions on what I should be doing to minimize pain. Will definitely see him again for my follow up.

I was most impressed by Dr Argintar’s understanding and enthusiastic support of my goal of returning to active participation in my sport, though I am an over-50 athlete. Dr Argintar was prompt, direct and took the time to explain my injury and route to recovery. As his patient, I felt respected and informed.

Dr. Argintar was very personable, explained what was going in with my injury, talked me through treatment options, and proposed a treatment plan that worked with my schedule. Great, quick visit.
