Open shoulder surgery is surgery through an incision in the area of the shoulder and is most commonly used for treatment of shoulder fractures, shoulder replacements, acromioclavicular joint reconstructions, biceps repair, clavicle fractures and many other procedures.

Expectations Pre, Post, and During The Surgery.
Before Surgery
Open shoulder surgery is done either as an outpatient or as an overnight stay procedure. Prior to surgery you will be asked to see your primary care doctor for “medical clearance”. They may check blood tests, EKG, and a chest x-ray in addition to other tests they find indicated.
Once surgery is scheduled, the hospital or surgery center will contact you ahead of time to provide specific details about your procedure. Please make sure to ask any questions you have and follow the instructions on when to arrive and especially on when to stop eating or drinking prior to surgery.
The Day of Surgery
On the day of surgery, the anesthesia staff will talk with you about anesthesia options. You will be asleep for the procedure and often a regional nerve block is recommended to numb the shoulder and arm for pain relief.
Once in the operating room, you will be positioned so that a clear view of the inside of your shoulder can be obtained. A member of the surgical team will clean the skin over the shoulder with an antiseptic solution and a sterile drape will cover your shoulder and arm and your forearm will be placed in a holding device to ensure your arm stays still.
Typically the incision is made over the fracture or area of reconstruction. Access to the shoulder joint itself is done through the deltopectoral interval, an interval between two muscles at the front of the shoulder. At the end of surgery the incision is closed with stitches and covered them with a large, soft bandage.
After Surgery
Postoperatively you will stay in the recovery room for 1 to 2 hours before being discharged home or to the hospital floor. Nurses will monitor your responsiveness and provide pain medication, if needed. You will need someone to drive you home and stay with you for at least the first night if you go home.

Recovery from shoulder surgery depends on the procedure performed but takes several weeks and a few months before full recovery. You may find it comfortable sleeping in a reclining chair or propped up in bed for the first few days after surgery. Physical therapy will play a vital role after surgery in regaining strength and motion.

Very nice office. The staff was professional, generally, but would benefit from being more sympathetic to patients waiting for over 45 minutes because someone double-booked the doctor. A simple “I’m sorry” would have done the trick for me, instead it left me infuriated as the girl at the counter asked whether I was in rush. Please, do not ask someone who has patiently waited for 30 minutes and is about to wait for another 20 minutes whether they are in a rush. Never appreciated, especially when it is your mistake! Dr. Argintar is an excellent doctor. He is caring and in spite of the fears of surgery, he calms and reassures his patients. The only downside that I found in visiting his 7th Street office on Capitol Hill, is that the ZocDoc system is not recognized there. I checked in on the system at the same time I booked the appointment, but none of my information went to that office so I had to sit there and fill out lots of papers. That was a serious inconvenience.

Dr. Argintar was great. He was able to diagnose me quickly and talk me through what was going on thoroughly. However, I showed up for my 11am appointment at 10:40 but wasn’t taken back into the office until 12:10. I didn’t end up even seeing the doctor until 12:20ish. And the staff was not the friendliest. There was one woman (Tasha I believe) who was very friendly and courteous, but everyone else seemed like they didn’t have time for things. I totally get that things get busy and backed up, but if you’re friendly about it I can deal with things better. A few people made it a bit more difficult. Regardless, I think it might have just been an off day and I would still recommend this doctor.

Doctor Evan Argintar is a very good doctor. However, even at his office there are always long waits — very typical in the USA. All the doctors in the hospital were almost over 1 hour waits. It seems that the people (formerly MedStar Hospital office) who schedule the appointments and the office staff expect that it is what the public has to do to see a doctor. However, I have lived in over 10 countries long-term and worked in another 25 short-term, and never had to wait so long as is expected in the USA. Americans have no idea how it works in other countries.

Doctor Evan Argintar is a very good doctor. However, even at his office there are always long waits — very typical in the USA. All the doctors in the hospital were almost over 1 hour waits. It seems that the people (formerly MedStar Hospital office) who schedule the appointments and the office staff expect that it is what the public has to do to see a doctor. However, I have lived in over 10 countries long-term and worked in another 25 short-term, and never had to wait so long as is expected in the USA. Americans have no idea how it works in other countries.show less

It was okay but I did not feel a good connection. He was willing to do the shoulder procedure (I had to change from my regular orthopedist because he was no longer in network). And I did not have a good comfort level with him. I cancelled the surgery and I am looking for another doctor.

Dr. Argintar was great. He was able to diagnose me quickly and talk me through what was going on thoroughly. However, I showed up for my 11am appointment at 10:40 but wasn’t taken back into the office until 12:10. I didn’t end up even seeing the doctor until 12:20ish. And the staff was not the friendliest. There was one woman (Tasha I believe) who was very friendly and courteous, but everyone else seemed like they didn’t have time for things. I totally get that things get busy and backed up, but if you’re friendly about it I can deal with things better. A few people made it a bit more difficult. Regardless, I think it might have just been an off day and I would still recommend this doctor.

Dr. Argintar is an excellent doctor. He is caring and in spite of the fears of surgery, he calms and reassures his patients. The only downside that I found in visiting his 7th Street office on Capitol Hill, is that the ZocDoc system is not recognized there. I checked in on the system at the same time I booked the appointment, but none of my information went to that office so I had to sit there and fill out lots of papers. That was a serious inconvenience.

The exam was extremely rushed and very cursory. The doctor seemed to reach a conclusion before I even finished discussing the symptoms. He didn’t even order an X-ray for a potentially broken bone. He offered no suggestions for proving relief in the short term even though I wa s having difficulty walking short distances. Dr. Argintar has a great bedside manner, and did a great job explaining my condition and his treatment recommendation. I would definitely see him again. Note that, in addition to seeing patients at Washington Hospital Center, has office hours one day each week on Capitol Hill.

Dr. A is great! He is friendly, knowledgeable, and accessible (responds email even). He helped me regain mobility and stability in my shoulder with surgery after another doc basically told me I had arthritis (I didn’t) and I would have to “live with it.” His office though has sometimes very long wait times. I don’t blame him though and he is worth the wait.

I’ve seen Dr. Argintar for other muscle/orthopedic problems. He did a thorough examination that was physical and visual. He looked through my medical folder to review the past doctor’s diagnosis and recommendations. He provided me recommendations on the medical options available to treat my problem. The diagnosis, medical treatment and other recommendations were very clear and concise. I was very satisfied using ZocDoc to schedule my appointment. I was expecting a 2 week waiting period for Dr. Argintar. To see that he was immediately available on my day off was absolutely great and coordinated well without having to take any leave. The ZocDoc technology features were easy to use and follow. The appt reminders by phone and email were very helpfu.

Dr. Argintar is a terrific specialist. As soon as I walked into the office, I was taken to the exam room and before I could become situated Dr. Argintar began the exam. He was thorough in explaining my MRI results and recommended the best possible solution for the problem I was experiencing.

I had a very bad experience with Dr Arginar. He took very little time to diagnose my problem. Recommended an MRI. Left the office without saying what would happen next. His assistant then came to see me and said they would follow up with my insurance and then get back in touch with me to schedule an MRI. They never got back in touch. When I tried calling his assistant doesn’t answer. I can’t leave a message because his inbox is full. I don’t even know whether they made a referral to the MRI department or not. Also, I had to wait for over an hour for my apointment and general support staff was very poor.

It’s difficult to rate a visit when you’re a new patient. I’m very satisfied with Dr. Argenta. I would refer him to others but the wait time in reception needs a little work.

Dr. Argintar was very helpful. I was relieved that he offers alternatives other than surgery. It would be great if he and his staff (and all service personnel) would be more sensitive about assuming a patient’s gender identity, especially if they do not identify with the gender binary.
