What Is Wrist Arthroscopy?

Hand and wrist

Wrist arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical technique that uses a small camera (arthroscope) and precise tools inserted through tiny incisions to evaluate, diagnose, and treat problems inside the wrist joint.

At Elite Ortho, wrist arthroscopy is commonly used to:

  • Perform carpal tunnel release
  • Debride or repair the TFCC ligament (triangular fibrocartilage complex)
  • Remove loose bone or cartilage fragments
  • Treat cartilage damage
  • Conduct diagnostic evaluations when the cause of wrist pain is unclear

This advanced approach allows for more targeted treatment with smaller incisions, resulting in reduced pain, less scarring, and a faster return to daily activities.

Expectations Pre, Post, and During The Surgery.

Before Surgery

Wrist arthroscopy is performed as an outpatient procedure. A visit to your primary care physician for medical clearance is necessary before surgery. This can include:

  • Blood tests.
  • EKG (electrocardiogram).
  • Chest X-ray.
  • Other tests as recommended by your physician.

Following the scheduling of your surgery, the surgical center will provide you details regarding.

  • What time to arrive.
  • When to stop eating or drinking.
  • What to bring on the day of surgery.

Don’t hesitate to ask questions so you can be ready.

The Day of Surgery

When you get here, the anesthesia team will talk to you. Most patients are given general anesthesia, and a regional nerve block is often provided to numb the wrist and arm after surgery for added comfort.

Once in the operating room:

  • A sterile field will be created by cleaning the area of wrist and arm.
  • Your hand will be positioned in a way that offers the surgeon a full access to the joint.
  • Sterile liquid will be congested in the joint to enhance the clarity of the field view and limit bleeding.
  • A small camera will show the inside structures of your wrist on a screen as we go.
  • Instruments that are specialized are put into 1-3 small cuts to: remove loose fragments, repair ligaments or cartilage, debride damaged tissue, anchor sutures, if needed.

Following the procedure, your incisions will be stitched and wrapped in a soft, padded bandage.

After Surgery

You will spend one to two hours in recovery while your responsiveness and pain levels are monitored. When you are stable, you will be sent home with instructions. You’re gonna need someone to drive you and stay with you the first night after surgery. Post-op care includes:

  • Managing pain with prescribed medications.
  • Keeping the wrist elevated to reduce swelling.
  • Using ice as directed during the first 48 hours.
  • Following bandage and incision care instructions.

Recovery & Rehabilitation

Your Path Back to Strength and Motion

After wrist arthroscopy, the recovery time depends on what was done. Most people will return to daily activities in a few weeks’ time. It may take many months to completely recover grip strength and function.

Physical therapy is a key component of recovery. Your post-operative rehab plan may include:

  • Range of motion exercises.
  • Grip strengthening routines.
  • Scar tissue mobilization.
  • Activities to restore wrist function in work or sports.
  • Rapid Rehab at Elite Ortho will closely monitor your progress and modify your plan accordingly.
